Chapter Five

He insists on driving me back home. I don’t mind him giving me a ride until we walk outside and I see a motorcycle. We walked to the diner, which is only a couple of blocks away from the trailer, so somebody must have brought the bike while we were having brunch inside. I wonder when, and I wonder how, but mostly I wonder why. We could have easily walked back to the venue and then I could have simply taken a taxi home. But now there is a motorcycle in front of us, and I'm pretty sure that I'm going to look like a coward if I say that I'm not going to ride on it.

I hesitate as I look at it. I stop, though I try to make it seem like I’m distracted. He looks down at me—because he’s much taller than me—and cocks his head. His hair is up in a bun so it doesn’t move with him in waves, like it did when he was performing last night or when we were in bed together.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing,” I reply. “I just—I hope you have a helmet.”

He rolls his eyes, smiling at me. “Of course I have a helmet.”

“I can get a taxi home,” I say, my throat dry.

His jaw drops open. “You’ve never been on a bike.”

“Well…”

“You’re scared.”

“I mean, not scared, just… okay, I’m scared,” I reply. He bites down on his lower lip, obviously trying not to smirk. I hate him, a little, but mostly I find it hopelessly endearing. “Look, I like a good thrill.”

He raises his eyebrows.

“I do,” I protest. “I like kayaking, scuba diving, hiking.”

He moves his head side to side, as if those were mostly acceptable adventurous activities.

I wave my hands in front of my face as I continue speaking. “But riding on a vehicle that doesn't even have four walls surrounding me and there are a bunch of idiots that could kill me all over the place, does not sound like my idea of fun.”

“I’m not going to kill you,” he says with a snicker.

“I’m not worried about you!”

“How about this? I’ll take the back roads. I won’t go on the freeway, so it won’t be too fast.”

“I don’t know, Jake.”

“Come on, Rick,” he says. “If you ever want to stop, just tell me.”

“Won’t it be too loud to tell you?”

He smiles. “Yeah, it might be a bit loud to tell me. Okay, if you want me to stop, slap my chest twice, okay?”

“Wait,” I say, cocking my head. “Slap your chest?”

“Well, you’re riding bitch,” he says. “Your arms are going to be wrapped around my waist and I don’t want to mistake that for you wanting me to stop.”

I look at him, my eyes wide. I don’t like the idea that I’m going to be riding bitch, but if I take him up on this offer, my arms are going to be wrapped around him and I’m going to be holding close to him.

“Or I mean, I could call you a taxi and…”

“No, it’s fine,” I say, a little too quickly.
